Bike Security: Bicycles should be locked at bike racks only per District Policy.
We have had bikes stolen that were locked using a small cable system. This
system appears to be easy to defeat. I recommend purchasing a steel U-bolt type
lock as a better theft prevention lock. Please keep in mind that all locks can be
defeated so the goal is to make it more difficult. We are working with M&O
to centralize several locations for bike racks and CCTV coverage to facilitate
security. REMEMBER; nothing is theft proof.

Phoenix College Goes Smoke Free As District-Wide Policy Takes Effect

(PHOENIX, Ariz., July 2, 2012) -- Adhering to a District-wide policy announced last fall, Phoenix College is now a smoke- and tobacco-free campus, which means smoking and tobacco usage on any part of campus property is prohibited.

The ban applies to all areas within school boundaries, including the inside of buildings, walkways and parking lots. It does not extend beyond campus boundaries, such as public perimeter sidewalks.

“There are many reasons why PC joins more than 700 colleges around the nation in this tobacco policy,” said Paul DeRose, vice president of administrative services for PC. “The compelling rationale for the policy is to create a healthier environment for everyone who comes to PC to study, work or visit. We understand people can still choose to smoke, just not on campus.”

Maricopa Chancellor Rufus Glasper said the policy, announced last fall, was established to further the health and well being of all MCCCD stakeholders.

“The goal of this policy is to provide a healthier learning and working environment," he said.

The policy will rely on self-enforcement. First time violators will be given a warning. Repeat offenders will be handled through Public Safety. Visit the District’s enforcement guidelines to learn more about specific enforcement provisions.

For the last several months, PC’s Student Life & Leadership has been informing students and employees of the new policy including information about cessation programs. PC student Loren Brock Economides said the ban will help push her to quit smoking.

"As a smoking students, I can relate to concerns about the right to make your own choices," she said. "But if you need a good reason to quit, your school is giving you one. I think more people will see it as a positive than a negative."

The District also developed a variety of strategies to help smokers and other tobacco users quit through educational classes and smoking cessation programs. These include:

MCCCD Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Ongoing Events, New Website

MCCCD Celebrates 50th Anniversary (PHOENIX, Ariz., July 2, 2012) -- A year-long celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Maricopa County Community Colleges District begins this week. A number of activities tied to the anniversary are planned throughout the year.

Additionally, a new website has been launched featuring commentary from more than 300 current and former students, faculty and staff, a historical timeline and an events calendar for this year and next. More information will be added throughout the celebration period.

While Phoenix College was established in 1920 and serves as the flagship institution for the District, the MCCCD was formed in1962 when voters chose to create a county-wide junior college district.

The system has grown to ten colleges, two skill centers and multiple satellite locations.

"We are proud to be commemorating 50 years of public higher education in Maricopa County," said Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor Rufus Glasper. "We have seen unmatched growth in this area of the country and with each passing year the Maricopa Community Colleges have met the educational needs of the community. In so doing, we have grown to one of the largest and most respected community college systems in the nation. We hope all of Maricopa County will join us in celebrating this momentous occasion."

The Maricopa Community Colleges are: Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Estrella Mountain Community College, GateWay Community College, Glendale Community College, Mesa Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, Phoenix College, Rio Salado College, Scottsdale Community College and South Mountain Community College. It also includes the Maricopa Skill Center, Southwest Skill Center, as well as several satellite campuses and business/industry; technical and customized training institutes.

Construction Project Transforms Phoenix College Campus; Completion Set for December 2012

(PHOENIX, June 25, 2012) – The Phoenix College campus is transforming into a more modern campus with greater amenities for students and employees even as it retains its historical look and legacy as the flagship institution of Maricopa Community Colleges. Phase II of the campus renovation project is in full swing and entire construction project will be completed in December.

Various stages of the project will be completed along with the way. First on the list to be completed will be the West Parking Lot, which will be ready in time for the crush of students attending in the fall semester. The improvements will allow a smoother flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic and shore up some drainage deficiencies. Drop off points will be better marked and landscaping will provide a more visually attractive parking area.

Next up for completion will be Sophomore Square. The Square makes up the central campus thoroughfare and traditionally has served as a major area for school and club functions as well as a social gathering point for students. The end results will be a more efficient square that fits coherently with the surrounding buildings. It will also be landscaped with mature trees to provide shade and cooling along with other upgrades such as electrical outlets and fiber optic improvements.

Students and others will notice the original PC fountain was dismantled to make way for a more open, pedestrian friendly Sophomore Square. A new zero-edge fountain which incorporates some of the original bricks from the old fountain will be built on the northern part of the Square.

The centerpiece of Phase II will be the new cafeteria, and a glass atrium connecting the old Hannelly Center with the new Enrollment Center, which was completed in January 2012. The plans call for that area to house Counseling, REACH/TRIO, which provides services to first-generation and low-income college students, and the Cafeteria. The latter will feature a wraparound patio that will overlook Sophomore Square and give diners an outdoor seating option.

The glass atrium and a skylight will provide ample natural light into those areas and give the building a bright airy feel, all the way down to the lower level. The atrium area will still leave a small area for outdoor seating and plants, and allow a mural completed by students more than 30 years ago to remain intact.

Finally, the project includes renovating the entrance to the John Paul Theatre, with the goal of allowing it to serve as a bookend to the renovated Sophomore Square. The new entrance will be complimented by a small outdoor theater.

Funding for both improvements came from a 2004 bond election passed by Maricopa County voters.

PC Softball Team Wins National Championship

The Phoenix College softball team captured its 9th national title this weekend in Clinton, Miss., at the NJCAA Division II National Softball Championship.

The Bears beat defending national champion Louisiana State University-Eunice twice on Saturday, May 19 -- the final day of the tournament -- to finish off a successful season.

For PC Head Coach Heinz Mueller, it was the eighth PC team he has guided to a national championship. Coach Mueller earned his 1,000th win as PC coach in March, making him one of only three NJCAA Division II softball coaches with more than 1,000 wins.

The Lady Bears entered the tournament ranked number two in the nation and won its first three games. But it dropped its fourth game to LSU-Eunice, 3-2 on Friday, forcing them to win three games on Saturday to earn the title.

With solid pitching from Sarah Ray, who won four games in the tournament, and Gina VanArsdall, who won two games, and a surge of power hitting led by Rachel Meyer, the Bears met the challenge. They hit a tournament record 12 home runs.

Meyer, who set a tournament record with six home runs, was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Ray was the Outstanding Pitcher and Valles captured Outstanding Offensive Player. Coach Mueller earned Outstanding Coach honors.

Three other PC players were named to the All Tournament Team: Cheyenne Adams, Krystal Garcia and VanArsdall.

The double elimination tournament also gave the players some great exposure on and off the field. It included banquets, socials, a home-run derby and a fireworks display.

Phoenix College Softball Team Readies for National Tournament May 17-19 in Clinton, Miss.

(PHOENIX, Ariz., May 14, 2012) – The Phoenix College softball team will face The Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville, Md. in the first round of the NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament, which runs May 17-19 in Clinton, Mississippi.

The Phoenix College softball team will be aiming for its 9th national title. They face CCCB-Catonsville, Md. (44-11) on Thursday, May 17.

The Bears (51-15) enter the 16-team tournament ranked number two in the nation behind top-ranked Louisiana State University-Eunice, La. (53-9). The team is loaded with talented players, says Head Coach Heinz Mueller, but he knows his team must play its best softball to capture the title.

“At this point, all the teams are capable of winning it,” said Coach Mueller, now in his 22nd season as PC Head Coach. “We can’t make light of any opponent. Just because we are ranked number two in the nation doesn’t mean we’re the second-best team.”

Good pitching, defense and timely hits make up the formula for success in the playoffs, he said.

“It’s still a game of execution,” he said. “We have a really good team offensively but in the playoffs the offense isn’t usually as productive because the pitching from other teams improves so much.”

Although Coach Mueller was hesitant to single out any one player, the team is led by pitchers Gina VanArsdall and Sarah Ray along with hitting production from Desirea Gil, Rachel Meyer, Megan Johnson, and Krystal Garcia.

“This team really embodies the word team,” said Coach Mueller, who earned his 1,000th win as an NJCAA Division II coach in March to go along with seven national titles. “We count on everyone to contribute.”

The double elimination tournament also gives players great exposure on and off the field. It includes banquets, socials, a home-run derby and a fireworks display.

“All the girls are really excited about this trip,” Coach Mueller said. “We haven’t been there (national tournament) in two years so everybody is looking forward to it.”

Phoenix College/ASU Medical Laboratory Science Program Wins MCCCD Innovation Award

(PHOENIX, Ariz., May 10, 2012) – A unique partnership program between Phoenix College and Arizona State University to create more bachelor’s degree level medical laboratory scientists has earned PC the 2012 Innovation of the Year Award from Maricopa Community Colleges and League for Innovation in the Community College.

The ASU/PC Medical Laboratory Science Partnership Program received the Dr. Paul M. Pair Innovation of the Year Award May 1 at the Rio Salado Conference Center. The recognition comes with $2,000 to further PC’s winning innovation. The Innovation Award is named in memory and in honor of Dr. Paul M. Pair, long-time member and former president of the Maricopa Colleges Foundation Board and a pioneer in in the field of data processing education.

The Pair Award winner is chosen from innovation projects submitted by each of the Maricopa Community Colleges and the District Office. Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges and the League for Innovation in the Community College co-sponsor the awards to recognize an employee or team of employees who have designed and implemented a significant innovation that has had a positive impact on the education of students.

Heather Moore, who received her Associates in Applied Science from the program in May, said the program led her to reevaluate her dreams and not settle for a two-year degree. She will begin work on a four-year Medical Laboratory Science degree in January 2013 at PC.

"I'm not the type of person satisified going halfway," said Moore, who shared her story with the committee charged with selecting the Pair award winner. "I have to go all the way. To have the opportunity to be a lead lab technician or supervisor and train others, you need a bachelor's degree. The way this program is structured, it is giving me that opportunity."

The PC program provides opportunities for students to earn a Bachelor’s of Applied Science by taking the majority, if not all, of their courses at Phoenix College. Students earn 90 credits from Phoenix College and 30 credits from Arizona State University and can essentially earn a bachelor's degree on the Phoenix College campus through hybrid delivery and videoconferencing technology.

The PC/ASU team consisting of Julie Stiak, Jeff Wolz, Dr. Sharon Halford, Dr. Maria Hesse, Dr. Casandra Kakar, Liz Parmelee, and Dr. David Young was recognized by the League for Innovation in the Community College for their roles in implementing the program.

“This prestigious innovation award validates the partnership with Arizona State University and use of innovative learning technologies in a hybrid delivery model,” said Julie Stiak, who co-directs the program for Phoenix College. “Clinical affiliates throughout the state are excited about this program and its potential as a staff professional development resource.”

The program saves students money by allowing them to pay PC’s lower tuition for 90 credits and they can take university-level courses on the PC campus because ASU provides associate professors to teach those courses at PC. Hybrid delivery and videoconferencing technology expand the program statewide and optimize student retention and success.

This is the second time in three years that Phoenix College has won the Pair Award. In 2009-2010, PC’s Schedule eZine, the digital flip magazine edition of the class schedule, took the top prize in 2009-2010.

The orientation to college and career classes allows the students to familiarize themselves with the college process, visit the college, and set goals. Most importantly, it gets them interested in attending college, with the majority of students going on to take classes at Phoenix College after they complete their GED. The staff at Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa go above and beyond to partner with PC in providing a supportive and encouraging environment that fosters student success.

K-12 Colleague

Raul Piña, Cartwright School District

Dr. Raul Piña, School Improvement Coach for Cartwright School District, has worked closely with the Raul H. Castro Institute (RCI) at Phoenix College for several years, partnering to host an annual middle school leadership conference. As the former principal of the Raul H. Castro Middle School, Raul was instrumental in the formation of this conference. This year, Phoenix College hosted the conference, providing space to host 500 students and 150 parents from neighboring Phoenix school districts. Raul’s ongoing commitment to spearhead this effort is commendable. Because of his leadership, increasing numbers of middle school students are learning that they hold great potential, and that not only is a college education within reach, but that it must be among their goals. Raul’s dedication to partnering with the RCI and Phoenix College helps ensure that middle school students stay in school and continue to progress through the educational pipeline.

Alumni Partner

She has worked with Alumni & Development Office staff to develop a campaign aimed at encouraging her peers to join her in this effort. She has lent her name and credibility to the project as one of PC’s most respected alumni, which has played a key component in its success, and has led by example by establishing a planned gift herself and allowing news of it to be shared publicly. Dr. Greathouse’s overall support and advocacy have been the catalyst in successfully moving the campaign forward.

Scholarship Partner

It is estimated that Phoenix College students have been awarded more than $354,000 in scholarships from the Dougherty Foundation. The process of awarding scholarships for multiple organizations can be time consuming, and determining the worthiness of one candidate over another is not always an easy task. Linda has handled all these tasks professionally and with compassion, and always with the best interests of students in mind. She is an exemplary scholarship partner for Phoenix College and a role model among executive directors of non-profit organizations.

Technology Partner

Chris Varela, NetApp

After speaking with Chris Varela, Arizona SLED Territory Manager for NetApp, in the fall of 2011, staff from Phoenix College’s Information Technology department learned about NetApp’s new education donation program. Chris shared that the program focuses on implementing state-of-the-art technology to help schools adopt and accelerate student learning systems and virtualization projects, as well as disaster recovery solutions. One of the goals of this program is to help institutions that have been impacted by substantial budget cuts, limiting their ability to provide all of the technology required to service the needs of the students. Phoenix College submitted a program application, which was taken into consideration by NetApp and eventually approved. The donated equipment has provided Phoenix College with the ability to expand the current storage capacity while taking advantage of the de-duplication and redundancy provided by the NetApp technology. Overall, this support from Chris Varela and NetApp has allowed PC to continue to maximize teaching and learning through the use of technology.
